DONOR SEMEN
Full Semen Analysis
Our donors are normal, physically and mentally sound men from a cross-section of society. Most of them are students from higher education. Each donor meets rigorous selection criteria and undergoes a thorough examination prior to acceptance. Donors do not profit financially and are only given a nominal fee to reimburse them for reasonable expenses incurred.
Anonymity
The identity of donors is known to Cryobank only and they are given explicit assurance of anonymity.
Donor requirements
Donors are fully informed concerning the activities of Cryobank and sign affidavits declaring that they are willing to donate semen to be used by childless couples for artificial insemination. Donors renounce all paternal rights and responsibilities.
Blood
Prior to approval, donors are tested for anti-bodies against HIV-I and II as well as hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs AG), hepatitis C (HCV-Ab), full blood count, liver enzymes, glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, urea, electrolytes, T-pallidum, gonorrhoea. A complete chromosome study is also done (specifically regarding the possible heritable conditions). The data is entered into a donor file. Every donor is examined and given final approval by a medical doctor.
Donors are tested for sexually transmissible diseases: HIV-I and II and hepatitis B and C, three monthly.
Storage
Donors and donor semen are treated in accordance with the guidelines of the American protocol. Semen stays frozen and in quarantine for a minimum of six months, after which time the donor must be HIV and Hepatitis negative before the semen can be released.
Donor selection
Donor characteristics on file include: donor number, height, weight, eye colour, hair colour, race, and peculiarities of appearance (e.g. complexion), physical profile, age, education, occupation, prospective or dominant hereditary traits, number of declared children and their development, blood type, karyotyping and negative results on tests for HBs Ag, HIV-I and II.
The goal is to match, as far as circumstances permit, the genetic characteristics of the social father. Traits considered might be race, height, weight, colour of eyes and colour of hair.
Eye colour
There are two genes for eye colour, blue and brown. The gene for brown is dominant, green and grey colours are caused by genetic mixing and belong to the blue group.
Hair colour
Light blond, medium blond, dark blond, brown, black and red.

INFORMATION FOR WOMEN WHO ARE TO BE INSEMINATED WITH DEEP FROZEN DONOR SEMEN
AIDS is a very serious disease which destroys the bodies defenses against infections and certain malignant tumors.
The disease is caused by a virus that can be transmitted in semen.
All possible precautions have to be taken to ensure that the donors do not belong to a HIV risk group.
The donors have been checked every three months by blood tests for HIV.
Donor semen is released only after it has been frozen for a minimum of six months and only after by virtue of a blood test, has been determined that the donor has not developed antibodies against the AIDS virus during that period.
In spite of these precautions to minimize risk, there does remain a remote possibility that AIDS or other infectious or hereditary diseases may be transmitted by artificial insemination.
