icon       Many prominent men are sperm donors. Many are husbands and fathers. All of them are willing to provide an 'invisible kindness' to someone desperate for a child with good genetic material. Donors are anonymous and have no knowledge of what happens to, or claim over who receives their sperm. Their wishes in terms of general recipients are however considered as far as race and religion is concerned (see Government Gazette 2957 Chapter 1.4).

In South Africa, donors are only allowed to receive compensation for out of pocket expenses. Donors receive a nominal fee to cover reasonable expenses incurred. Laboratory testing of sperm for disease and genetic damage is paid for by Cryobank.

HOW TO DONATE SPERM

If you are interested in becoming a donor, please visit our Sperm Donor Plea page for more information. Sperm donations are collected at our offices in Johannesburg where facilities are provided to collect, screen and store donations. Semen donations are obtained through masturbation.

Donor requirements
Above normal sperm count. Clean familial history in terms of hereditary diseases, normal physique, no particular features. It is preferential that donors abstain from sex/ejaculation for at least three days prior to donation.

Anonymity
You will renounce your paternal rights and responsibilities during the donation process. Donors are guaranteed anonymity throughout the process, should future legislation change this, donors will be notified and permission requested prior to any further use of there donated sperm.

The legal issues
Anyone participating in the donation process is asked to sign a letter of permission.

Screening
We screen your blood thoroughly for diseases and genetic conditions. Each potential donor is screened and passed by a medical doctor. Cryobank pays for everything, full semen analysis, blood tests, DNA tests-chromosome studies, reasonable expenses incurred by donors in the form of a nominal fee, the collection materials, the facility, the freeze process, the storage, the marketing etc. Ultimately offcourse the patient pays, that is why there is a charge connected to the donor sperm, the patient gets the sperm for free but pays for the value added and associated services.

Some tests required for semen donation
HIV I and II. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs Ag). Hepatitis C (HCV-Ab). Full blood count. Liver enzymes. Glucose. Cholesterol. Triglyceride. Urea. Electrolytes. T. pallidum (for Syphilis). Gonorrhoea. Chromosomal study. Full Semen Analysis.

Because an HIV test is mandatory, we make sure that only you are given the results of your HIV test.

DONOR REFERRAL

We would appreciate it if you would share your experiences with other potential donors. Donating semen is a way of participating helpfully in your community and creating the possibility to bring other families the joy of having children. Every year children are born throughout the world using artificial insemination. In practical terms it means many families are completed each year with the help of men like you.
